Viola Faculty, Violin Faculty, Mozart Strings Faculty
Dr. Rebecca Flank is a violist and chamber musician in the Cincinnati area. After beginning her studies at age 11, Rebecca went on to attend Emory University where she graduated with a dual Bachelor of Arts in Medievalism and Viola Performance (cum laude). While completing her Bachelor’s, Rebecca won the Emory University Concerto Competition, performing Hindemith’s Der Schwanendreher in November of 2014. She then moved onto Boston University School of Music, where she received her Masters of Music in Viola Performance. She is a graduate of the College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) in Cincinnati, where she received both her Artist Diploma and Doctorate of Musical Arts in Viola Performance.
As a teacher, Rebecca has taught violin and viola students of all ages and ranges of experience, from beginners through to students at the conservatory level. She is thrilled to have had students accepted into the viola performance program at CCM, as well as other colleges around the country. Her primary belief as a teacher is that a confident, happy student is a successful student, and she works hard to encourage emotional health in students as well as growth in the technical ability to play their instrument.
An experienced principal violist, Rebecca has led viola sections at Emory, Boston University, CCM, and in professional orchestras around the Boston and Cincinnati areas. In the Cincinnati area, she is a member of the Richmond Symphony Orchestra and the Cincinnatus String Quartet, and plays with Kentucky Symphony, Lexington Philharmonic, Lima Symphony, and Dayton Philharmonic. Prior to her move to Cincinnati, Rebecca played in the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra, and was a member of the Unitas Ensemble, Boston Chamber Orchestra, and Boston Civic Orchestra.
She is on the Latin Grammy nominated 2018 album release of the Unitas Ensemble with the Latin American String Quartet, entitled Estaciones (available on iTunes, Spotify, and Amazon). She is also pleased to hold (with the Cincinnatus String Quartet) the top prize awarded to a quartet from 2021's Clara Schumann International Competition, in the category of professional chamber music. Rebecca has performed in the Aspen Music Festival, Brevard Music Festival, Wintergreen Music Festival, the Juilliard String Quartet Seminar, and Karen Tuttle Workshop, as well as in masterclasses for Attar Arad, Don Weilerstein, Carol Rodland, Lynne Ramsay, Karen Ritscher and Jeffrey Irvine.
Rebecca’s principal teachers were Yinzi Kong, Daniel Dona, Michelle LaCourse, and Catharine Carroll-Lees. She also studied chamber music with the Vega Quartet, Muir Quartet, and Ariel Quartet. Outside of Music, Rebecca is a devoted fan of story telling: she writes daily, reads often, and loves TV and film. Armed with her BA in Medievalism and doctoral specialty in Medieval Musicology, Rebecca can often be found learning new languages or delving into historical texts. Ask her about her two cats--sometimes they make guest appearances at lessons!
